A few days after 9/11/01, GVB volunteers planted a row of jacarandas along Alameda Avenue at Dos Pueblos High with the help of a California Releaf grant.  Just in time for graduation, these trees eleven years later are showing off their blooms.  Note that we planted the trees so that their blooms would fall on the grass and not on the sidewalk

Goleta Valley Beautiful just completed a three year $110,000 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grant, commonly known as a Stimulus grant.  California Releaf coordinated the competitive grant, which helped create and maintain jobs while completing local tree planting and care projects.  Full copies of the final report are available at the GVB office.   The California Conservation Corps played a large part in completing this project, along with our new partner Palabra.  Palabra is a south coast nonprofit seeking to minimize youth on youth violence by utilizing innovative intervention approaches that focus on youth development.  They focus primarily on youth who are or might become clients of the juvenile justice system or who are otherwise underserved by traditional mainstream agencies.  This month, Palabra acted as a tree care crew completing projects in the City of Goleta, Santa Barbara County Parks, the Page Youth Center, Ellwood School and helping measure the Sister Witness Tree in support of its submission for recognition as California’s Biggest Sycamore Tree.

Thanks to participating Interns and Volunteers/Goodbye Steph

It’s the end of the spring term already and we must say thanks and goodbye to our fine group of Greenhouse Interns, many sponsored by the UCSB Coastal Fund.  We’re also saying good bye  to our mapping interns, and most of all our long term office assistant Stephanie Brown, who is graduating this term.  Good luck to all.

Goleta Valley Beautiful News Briefs

GVB Critics – A GVB response will be issued soon in response to criticisms and accusations directed at GVB during the public comment session at the last 3 City of Goleta Council meetings.  One member of the public appeared before the Goleta Council and made accusations against and criticisms of GVB, the City Manager and various Council members.  The GVB Board of Directors is preparing a response and we will post it on our website.  GVB believes that we are fully complying with all laws and regulations applicable to us.  It is unfortunate to see dedicated public officials and GVB attacked without merit.  GVB appreciates the City of Goleta’s urban forestry efforts, and GVB will continue to pursue its mission of enhancing sustainable public beauty in the Goleta Valley, including supporting and promoting a healthy and expanding urban forest.

Summer Interns – Paid and volunteer summer intern positions at the Devereux Greenhouse and Growing Grounds are avaialbe starting June 18th.  Call 685=7910 for details and an application.

Goleta Valley Beautiful Board of Directors Openings –The GVB Board has three openings currently, two for general members, and a third UCSB Undergraduate position.  Call 685-7910 or e-mail kknight@goletavalleybeautiful.org for more information.

Thanks for your 2012 Membership – The GVB Board of Directors thanks all of the 2012 Goleta Valley Beautiful Donor members. Your support helps fund our general operating costs (under 10%), and provides leverage for grant and foundation funding.
