·     250 Year Old Heritage Sycamore Rescued by GVB May be Largest in the State

Hard to believe but for the last ten years, a 46” and a 35” Canary Islands Palm have been growing out of the base of the Sister Witness Tree, one of the oldest sycamore trees on the south coast. The Sister Witness Tree is named for its close connection with the nearby Witness Tree in the patio of the Sizzler Restaurant. Crews for the California Conservation Corps spent several days removing the palms and pulling out the debris. California ReLeaf provided funding for this project through a grant from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Program. Marborg Industries invested in this project by providing a 40 yard container to haul away the palms, which have to be disposed of as trash rather than green waste because the fronds cannot be recycled. Crews also removed a car seat at the base of the Sycamore tree that was embedded in the base of the palms.

Preliminary measurements of the Sister Witness Tree indicate it may be a candidate for a California Big Tree designation as the largest sycamore in California. The tree measures a whopping 606” in circumference (that’s 50 feet!), an average 85’ canopy, and approximately 100’ tall. We’ll be following up with more specific measurements before this tree is submitted to California Big Trees Inventory.

Southern California Gas supported GVB planting efforts with a grant to plant and maintain 26 low allergen trees at Girsh Park.  The SoCal Gas Project ‘Bettering the Air We Breathe’ project is aimed at improving air quality, sequester carbon and helping us all breathe a little bit easier.  134 volunteers contributed 351 community service hours to plant 26 trees at two tree planting events at Girsh Park during April. All trees planted are rated at 4 or less on the Ogren allergen scale of allergic sensitivity of one to ten, with 1 being the lowest.   On April 7th, 56 volunteers planted 11 trees including 3 Catalina Ironwood (Lyonothamnus floribundus asplenifolius), 4 Jacaranda (Jacaranda mimosifolia), one Broad Leafed Fig (Ficus auriculata), one Red Maple (Acer rubrum), and one Brazilian Cedarwood (Cedrela fissilis). On 4-28-12, 78 volunteers planted, watered, mulched, and installed drip irrigation at selected sites for 15 low allergen trees. Tree species included 2 Catalina Ironwood, 3 Tipuana Tipu, 4 Raywood Ash, 1 Tulip, 1 Toona, 1 Brazilian Cedarwood, 2 Goldenrain, and 1 Monkeyhand tree.

Volunteer groups participating in these events included Alpha Phi Omega, Pocketful of Sunshine, Dos Pueblos High, UCSB’s ONE, Hermanos Unidos, Mormon Helping Hands (Goleta Valley Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints), UCSB American Red Cross Chapter, and GVB UCSB Greenhouse Interns.

Sponsors for this event in addition to Southern California Gas’s Bettering the Air We Breathe grant included UCSB Coastal Fund, West Covina Nurseries, San Marcos Growers, Santa Barbara County Resource Recovery and Waste Management Division, The Foundation for Girsh Park, Kitson Landscape Management, and hundreds of Goleta Valley Beautiful donor members.

Goleta Valley Beautiful News Briefs

Citrix Earth Day – Goleta Valley Beautiful participated in the annual Citrix Earth Day Festival held on the grounds of Citrix on Hollister Avenue. Citrix generously donated all proceeds from the sale of lunch meals at the festival to Goleta Valley Beautiful. Thanks to Citrix for their ongoing support of GVB.

Invest from the Ground Up Campaign Presentation Boards Unveiled – The California Urban Forest Council and the Western Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture have teamed up to provide a presentation on the benefits of investing in urban forestry. The professionally prepared poster size presentation boards highlight the long term benefits of investing in urban forestry, particularly aimed at small businesses and homeowners. The portable presentation board is available for loan for public presentations. Please contact Ken Knight, Central Coast Urban Forest Council Co-Chair at (805) 252-1952 to arrange for its use.

Al Turnbull Grove Tree Removed- CCC crews under the supervision of GVB Executive Director and Arborist Ken Knight removed a 25’ tall oak in the middle of the Al Turnbull Grove at Lake Los Carneros Preserve. The tree died due to an attack of oak borers. The urgency of removing this tree was to prevent oak borers from spreading to other trees in the Al Turnbull Grove. CCC crews removed the entire tree and disposed of the wood in a Marborg trash container. Wood infected with oak borers should not be left on site or used as green waste due to the likelihood of spreading the oak borers to other trees.

Goleta Valley Beautiful Board of Directors Openings –The GVB Board has three openings currently, two for general members, and a third UCSB Undergraduate position.  Call 685-7910 or e-mail kknight@goletavalleybeautiful.org for more information.

Thanks for your 2012 Membership – The GVB Board of Directors thanks all of the 2012 Goleta Valley Beautiful Donor members. Your support helps fund our general operating costs (under 10%), and provides leverage for grant and foundation funding.
