·        Oak Worms Attack!  Don’t panic but there is not much You should do about It.

The oak worm caterpillars are everywhere this year.  They will eat all of the leaves of your oak trees including the Coast Live Oak, Island Oak, Valley Oak  and any other tree born from acorns.  Aside from the yucky frass (worm poop), the caterpillars are more of a nuisance than a threat to your oak trees.  The leaves will grow back and soon this widespread infestation of oak worms will be nothing more than a bad memory.  For more information on oak worms and how to deal with them, try this website www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/PMG/PESTNOTES/pn7422.html .

·        The Lorax Is Coming

This weekend, thousands of local families will enjoy the new animated movie The Lorax, about the furry Dr. Seuss creature who speaks for the trees. What they may not realize is that there are real-life Loraxes right here in the Goleta Valley.

Goleta Valley Beautiful speaks for the trees every single day. We are dedicated to planting and protecting trees in Goleta Valley—helping to preserve and grow the forest right here where we live.

In the new movie The Lorax, all the Trufulla trees are gone. The forests have been destroyed, and young people dream of seeing a “real” tree.  In the movie, neighborhood streets are lined with man-made, artificial approximations of trees. Believe it or not, this vision isn’t as far from reality as you may think. The scary truth is that deforestation is happening not just in vast forests like the Amazon, but right here in American cities and towns.

A new report from the US Forest Service shows that our cities are losing 4 million trees each year. In communities across the country, this loss of canopy cover means Americans are losing out on the enormous benefits of healthy urban forests. Trees in cities help clean our air, reduce our energy use, manage stormwater overflow and mitigate water pollution. They keep us healthy and cool, while also keeping our neighborhoods green and beautiful.

The Lorax reminds all of us that humans and nature are inextricably intertwined, and that trees are essential for strong communities. We can’t just stand by—like the Lorax, we must do what we can to keep nature a part of our lives.

Goleta Valley Beautiful is a member of the national Alliance for Community Trees, the statewide California ReLeaf organization, and we hold activities throughout the year to promote the trees here in Goleta Valley.  Join us and become a real-life Lorax. Together, we can make our city cleaner, greener, and healthier. Learn more about what you can do at www.goletavalleybeautiful.org and contact us at 685-7910.

·        Alliance For Community Trees Awards $5000 grant to GVB and Fairview Gardens for Fruit and Shade Trees

We just received word that the Alliance for Community Trees has awarded Goleta Valley Beautiful a $5000 grant to implement a People’s Garden Project.  The project is scheduled to be implemented between August and October of 2012.   A brief summary of the project in below as taken from our grant application:

The proposed People’s Garden project, a collaboration of nonprofits Goleta Valley Beautiful and The Center for Urban Agriculture at Fairview Gardens, will demonstrate both of the Alliance for Community Trees’ strategic goals.

First, the planting of 12 shade trees within the center for urban agriculture at Fairview Gardens will provide shade for educational and public gathering areas, and screening from surrounding suburban residential development.

Second, the planting of up to 80 fruit trees will be integrated into the urban agriculture program.  Fairview Gardens is located in an urban area surrounded by subdivisions.  The gardens provide both an educational resource and locally grown organic food, which is sold at an onsite stand, at local Farmers Markets, and distributed to members of the CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program.

Goleta Valley Beautiful proposes to deepen the relationship between the two organizations by combining our missions of a healthy urban environment with tree and plant education by this joint planting, care and education project.

For more information on this project, please call 685-7910.
