Thanks to the 40 volunteers who contributed 280 hours of community service at the Ninth Annual Young Tree Workshop, held at San Marcos High School on 1/21/12. Attendees received a morning of expert shade tree care instruction from noted arborists Bill Spiewak, Dan Condon, George Jimenez, Dougal House, and Ken Knight. For the first time this year, Norm Beard was present to show how to prune fruit trees. Attendees planted a Chinese Flame Tree on the campus as part of the instruction process. In the afternoon, under the supervision of the expert arborists, the attendees split into groups to provide structural pruning to more than 125 young trees planted throughout the San Marcos campus.

In addition to general members of the public attending from as far away as San Luis Obispo, groups represented included San Marcos and Dos Pueblos High students, Los Prietos Boys Camp, and UCSB Devereux Greenhouse and Growing Grounds interns.

Sponsors for this event included Vice Principal Dan Garske and San Marcos High PTA which provided lunch, Central Coast Urban Forest Council supported stipends for several arborists, California ReLeaf provided tools, California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection provided educational materials, the Santa Barbara Unified School District provided the Cafeteria where the workshop was located, West Covina Nurseries provided a discount on the Chinese Flame tree, Goleta Valley Beautiful Board members Zea Bauer and Phebe Mansur donated their time to assist in registration and picking up supplies, and hundreds of Goleta Valley Beautiful donor members for supporting the preparation and implementation of this annual event.

·        Southern California Gas Supports Girsh Park Tree Planting Project

Southern California Gas announced an award of $5000 to Goleta Valley Beautiful, in conjunction with the Foundation for Girsh Park, to implement will a low allergy tree planting program at Girsh Park in Goleta, California. Girsh Park is a 25 acre cooperative community effort that is owned and operated by The Foundation for Girsh Park, also a 501(c)(3) nonprofit foundation. It is home to the Dos Pueblos Little League, the AYSO, dog training, and many youth programs. It also hosts the Goleta Lemon Festival and the Goleta fireworks display on the Fourth of July. Because of the high level of year-round activity, tree planting and maintenance is important for the park and the community. Goleta Valley Beautiful plans to plant 100 low allergen trees on park property in order to minimize pollutants, provide shade protection from harmful rays and clean the air, and give the community a healthy urban forest. Of the 100 trees that will be planted, 90% will be in the 1-4 category on the allergy index scale (according to "Allergy Free Gardening" by Thomas Leo Ogren). 10% will be in the 5-7 category.  The project is undergoing further review and design work as part of a larger project under development by Girsh Park staff and Kitson Landscape Management Company.  If all goes well, the planting could begin in early April.

·       Goleta’s Heritage Trees Suffering from Neglect, Uncertainty

P1200001.JPG  P1200003.JPG

There is still no final word on the possible closure of the Sizzler Restaurant which houses a 250 year old+ Witness Tree on its  patio. The Sizzler staff have been good stewards of the Witness Tree, and have retained professional tree care companies over the years to maintain the tree’s integrity.  GVB members enjoyed many a summer lunch on the patio around the Witness Tree, especially during our annual Heritage Tree Tours.  We thank Sizzler for its commitment to Goleta’s best known heritage tree.

Unfortunately,  Goleta’s Sister Witness Tree, bigger and possibly older than the Witness Tree , is in a sad state of neglect.  Located across Hollister Avenue from the Sizzler along the west side of San Jose Creek, the tree sitting behind the used parking lot is now on the border of property recently acquired by the City of Goleta for a park.  The Sister Witness Tree has lost several major branches due to decay, but it is a huge Canary Island Palm sat its base that threatens to completely overwhelm the tree.   In coming months, GVB hopes to rally community support for an effort to stabilize the tree before any further damage can occur.

·        Friends and Family Honor Former Goleta Valley Beautiful President Sam Alfano

P1250004.JPG  P1250007.JPG

A group of about 20 friends and family of the late Sam Alfano gathered at Stow Grove Park last week to plant 3 California Redwood trees on the south side of the redwood grove.  Sam’s wife, son and daughter were present to share in some of the delightful memories of a life well spent.  The 10’ tall redwood trees have been growing in the Devereux Growing grounds since the 2008 project where GVB planted 62 trees in this grove with Laguna Blanca School children.  We were waiting for a moment for the right time to add these final trees, and this was it.  Although the City no longer allows plaques at honor trees in parks, we all know that these are Sam’s trees.`

·        More Oaks on Cathedral Oaks

DSC_4288.JPG  DSC_4290.jpg   DSC_4287.jpg

Goleta Valley Beautiful and the California Conservation Corps added 87 more oaks to Cathedral Oaks Road in January, 26 in the unincorporated area and 61 in the City of Goleta.  “You cannot begin to imagine how pleasantly surprised we were a few evenings ago when we went for our regular walk.  Going east on Cathedral Oaks from Winchester Canyon Road we were delighted to see freshly planted trees on both sides of the road for a short distance’ wrote Helen and Hugh Smart to the Goleta City Council, … “ We can only hope that this is the beginning of yet more tree plantings along our roads.”   Unfortunately our tree planting grant programs are ending within the next month, so this is it for awhile.

·        A followup to the ‘State Farm incident’

Recently the Goleta City Council and staff received numerous comments concerning Goleta Valley Beautiful replacing a GVB planted tree on City right of way that was destroyed in a car accident.  While a small number of dissidents have consistently opposed GVB tree planting and care efforts, the statements of these people in regard of to a State Farm reimbursement of funds were incorrect.  A subsequent City investigation revealed Goleta Valley Beautiful acted without malice in the matter, and City and GVB staff have met to discuss improvements to tree care administrative procedures.

Goleta Valley Beautiful’s financial records are open for public inspection upon request.  The public can always contact us at 685-7910 to get accurate information on GVB operations, and avoid the irresponsible allegations such as recently occurred.
