  21. The GVB truck is dead! Long live the GVB truck!

After five years of constant service with projects every weekend, the engine in the GVB truck failed. The truck was originally purchased with a grant from the SB Foundation and contributions from Graham Chevrolet in August of 2003. The $10,000 cost to replace the engine was beyond our means, and not recommended for a truck with close to 150,000 miles.
Fortunately, Kitson Landscape Management came to our rescue. Kitson had a heavy duty flatbed truck, which needed a new transmission, that they agreed to donate to GVB. In a remarkable show of support from current and former members of the GVB Board of Directors, President David Fainer organized a fund drive that resulted in $5500 in funds to pay for the transmission repair, transfer of the box, hitch and lift on the old truck to the new, and to have some available for additional repairs. In addition to our current board members, additional contributors included former board members Sam Alfano, Lori Roper, Marc Bradley, Doug Winter, and a $1000 grant from the UCSB Coastal Fund. Thank you all for keeping us running. Long live the truck!

Trees = Math + Science at Oct 23rd Science Night at Kellogg Elementary

On Thursday evening, October 23rd, over 300 Kellogg Elementary students and parents participated in the annual Science Night activities. GVB used modifications to Project Learning Tree tools to teach math and science concepts to the participants using trees as an example. Students learned how to tell time through reading tree rings, explored examples of all 27 different species of trees on the Kellogg campus, and tested acorns for viability, while the younger students made leaf prints of selected trees. A special treat for students were Tree Fun Facts for Kids cards provided through a grant from the Alliance for Community Trees (ACT) in partnership with the Home Depot Foundation. Children were provided 3 different cards with tree-related activities that they could do with their parents at home. A limited number of tool aprons were also distributed with the cards.
Volunteer Science Night Presenters are needed to help with the La Patera Elementary School Science Night on Thursday November 6 from 5:30 pm to 8 in addition to the Science Nights coming up at El Camino (February 24), Ellwood (February 26) and several others to be scheduled. No experience is necessary for these fun events; we’ll train you on the tree-related math and science presentations we make! For more information, please call us at 685-7910

Water Kings and Queens Needed to Adopt FREE street trees in Goleta through a California ReLeaf Tree Planting Grant

We've already planted trees at Carlo, Hillview, Braeburn, Wakefield, Stow Canyon, Del Norte, Verona, Paseo Palmilla, and Caroldale. You could be next! We're still taking orders for volunteers within the City of Goleta that are willing to water and weed a tree in a parkway (between the curb and the sidewalk) next to your house for the next two summers. In return, GVB volunteers will install a FREE street tree, along with arranging for installation of rootshields (if needed). Specific tree species and locations are subject to City selection criteria. The time to act is now as GVB has secured a grant for only 50 street trees. To sign up as Water King or Queen, call 685-7910. For those of you who have already responded, we'll be scheduling a date for planting in October.

    Our Oldest Donor Member

Sister Witness Tree gives us clones so that we can continue planting native trees throughout the Goleta Valley. In early November, we are asking our not-so-ancient friends to help us with financial support to continue GVB operations. We make only one mailing a year for membership support, so please look for our Planting For Tomorrow GVB envelope when it arrives in the mail in early November! If you miss our mailer, you can donate online via TreeLink, or access the 2009 Membership forms on our website soon at www.goletavalleybeautiful.org, or call us at 685-7910!
