    3. GVB News Tidbits
- Feb 4 Basic Young Tree Care 2 Workshop - For those of you novices who want to know more about the basics of tree planting and maintenance, we again have enlisted the talents of expert arborists and urban foresters to explain the basics in just one Saturday morning.  We have included all new material from last year^s workshop, which attracted over 80 participants.  The workshop is sponsored by the Central Coast Urban Forest Council and all of the South Coast ^Beautiful^ organizations.  Lunch is included and there is no charge, but you must register in advance.  See the registration flier at the end of this newsletter.  This workshop and the Project Learning Tree workshop require separate registration.
- Feb 4 Project Learning Tree Workshop -  In one Saturday afternoon, teachers and environmental educators will learn curriculum-approved methods for incorporating tree and urban forest themed environmental activities into your lesson plans.  Led by trainers from the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden and the Channel Islands National Park, participants will be provided extensive lesson plans and activities to try out and take with you.  Lunch is included and there is no charge, but you must register in advance.  See the registration flier at the end of this newsletter.  This workshop and the Basic Young Tree Care 2 Workshop require separate registration.
- GVB listed twice in new phonebooks - After 32 years of not being in the phonebook at all, Goleta Valley Beautiful is now in the phone twice, once under our office at 5638 Hollister Room 200D, and second under the Goleta Valley Chamber of Commerce, who will forward calls to us.  Now you have multiple ways to reach us!  Our cell phone 252-1952, still remains unlisted since it is not ties to a residential location.
Record breaking tree planting month - The 131 trees we planted in January broke our previous monthly planting record of 120 trees set back in February 2001, when we planted 120 trees.  We had help from Bill Nolan and the California Conservation Corps to plant trees in the medians around the City of Goleta.  In addition to time constraints, the CCC is more experienced at planting under hazardous situations in the middle of the road than our normal crew of volunteers
Rosemary ^Zea^ Bauer joins GVB Board of Directors - Rosemary Bauer, also known as Zea to her friends, joins the GVB Board of Directors this month.  Zea works with the Los Padres Council of the Boy Scouts of America and she will be working to strengthen our links with youth groups in the area.  Welcome aboard!  We currently have one vacancy open on the Board of Directors.  For information, contact President Laura Funkhouser at 683-0121.
March 4 California Arbor Day celebration at Girsh Park - Celebrate California Arbor Day (technically March 3 on Luther Burbank^s birthday) with a tree planting and Honor tree maintenance day at Girsh Park on Saturday March 4.  We^ll follow it up with a hot dog and hamburger lunch for volunteers at the Girsh Park Community Center.

Neighborhood Cleanups  - On 1/14/06 the Nasons collected one 32-gallon bag full in 2.5 person-hours on Fairview from Holiday Hill to Cathedral Oaks, on Cathedral Oaks from Fairview to Los Carneros, and on Los Carneros. from Cathedral to the freeway.  On 1/21, they collected  three  32-gallon equivalent bags over 2.5 man-hours, along Cathedral Oaks from Santa Margarita to Los Carneros, along Los Carneros. down to the overpass and beyond to Los Carneros Way, along Los Carneros Way to Hollister, and along Calle Real from La Patera to the back driveway into Orchard.    This week^s specialty was 3 half-full gallon jugs of milk!    On 1/28, they collected 2 equivalent orange bags in 3 person hours.  They worked Cathedral Oaks from Santa Margarita to Los Carneros, down Los Carneros to 101, back along Calle Real to the last bend near the Highway Patrol, along Cathedral from Kellogg to Patterson, and down Patterson to about Parejo.  Unusually heavy on empty cigarette packs this time.  Don, Judy and their group do projects on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month. GVB will sponsor cleanups with your neighborhood groups at your request, just call 252-1952

City Park Tree Inventory continues - Volunteers helping with the tree inventories within the City of Goleta include Soumil Mehta and Dan Condon.  More volunteers needed.   Call 683-0121

5. Water Kings and Queens. - Please water young trees planted within the last two years!  The anticipated winter rains were very light in January and indications are that early February will be dry too, which makes supplemental watering necessary.  One deep watering (about 20 gallons-no runoff) every 2 weeks should be adequate.
