City of Goleta Community Projects Grant- GVB received a $2,500 for the El Encanto Heights Beautification Project. The project will be to cleanup, prune, mulch and replant the 10^ wide section of Calle Real parkway between Colusa and Daffodil adjacent to Highway 101. The parkway plantings have not been maintained except for annual weed abatement. The project objective is to involve El Encanto Heights residents in reclaiming the parkway as a source of beauty, to reduce ongoing weed and litter costs, to provide screening from adjacent 101 traffic, and to use native plants for ongoing community environmental benefits. Initial discussions with City staff and residents will begin in May with a major community cleanup workday scheduled for the September 18 (Day of Caring) and an October 16 planting day.

Upper State Street Ficus Trees Saved -
Kudos to all those involved in the decisions to save the Ficus trees on upper State Street. We are particularly pleased to see Goleta residents adding their voices to the editorial pages in the Santa Barbara News Press, along with Dan Condon^s commentary. While GVB does not promote planting new Ficus trees in parkways, we applaud the efforts to save healthy urban trees and make accommodations for them, such as flexible sidewalks. We urge City of Goleta and Santa Barbara County tree and sidewalk maintenance staff to invest in the book "Reducing Infrastructure Damage By Tree Roots: A Compendium of Strategies" by L. R. Costello and K. S. Jones, a 2003 publication by the Western Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture. GVB has the book available for loan.

6. Water Kings and Queens. -
April was another abnormally dry month with some really scorching weather at the end. We^ll begin rolling out Treegator (portable tree irrigators) installation beginning May 1 and continuing throughout the month. Volunteers needed to help-call 252-1952! If you have had new trees planted by GVB in the past year and a half and your tree is not watered by an irrigation system, we^ll be delivering a Treegator to you. Please begin filling it immediately and refill it once a week. NOTE: Treegators should be place on a short bed of mulch (no mulch touching the tree trunk) to avoid the holes on the bag from clogging up. If your Treegator doesn^t empty within ten hours, or if you develop a hole in the bag so that the water runs off the rootball, contact us at 252-1952
If we don^t get to you within the first week of May, you may need to create a temporary soil watering berm one to two feet away from the trunk and encircling your tree, and deep water your tree with a slow trickling hose .
